Mental Health Recovery Across Cultures: What It Means to Live a Fulfilling Life

Prof. Yasuhiro Kotera (University of Nottingham) will present a specialized lecture on April 2, 2025, 6 PM, D22 room.

Mental health recovery is about more than symptom reduction—it's about supporting people to live meaningful and fulfilling lives. Today, many national policies embrace recovery as a central goal in mental healthcare. But how recovery is understood and achieved can vary widely across cultures.

This area remains under-researched, and a lack of cultural understanding has sadly contributed to many preventable tragedies in mental health services. In this talk, Dr Yasuhiro Kotera will share insights from his cross-cultural studies on mental health recovery, summarising knowledge reported in more than 250 publications. He will explore how cultural understanding can protect against harm, improve care, and help people rebuild their lives with dignity.

Students interested in psychology, psychiatry, social work, and global mental health are especially welcome.
